Head Over Heels A Novel edition by Serena Bell Contemporary Romance eBooks Reviews
After a failed blind date about three years ago, instead of moving on and never seeing each other again, Chase and Liv quickly became best friends. Now, they help each other decompress after other various bad dates without the added tension of anything happening between them. When Chase is forced to fire his current nanny, Liv agrees to step into the position temporarily as she just accepted a new job in Denver beginning in two weeks. It's also convenient because now she'll have somewhere she can stay until the move. However, as Chase and Liv are constantly in each other's sights it becomes apparent that maybe they are attracted to each other besides in friendship. What begins as a tentative temporary fling, quickly heads into serious territory. But will their fears keep them from speaking the words they both want to hear?
It's be awhile since I've read a friends-to-lovers romance, and this is the first book I've read by Serena Bell. I think she did a wonderful job of making the layers on conflicts and hang-ups that Chase and Liv face seem really plausible to their romance. And I really like their friendship, even with the undeniable layers of apparent attraction they have for one another.
Liv grew up in foster care and was never really in a place for a long time. She learned quickly to not set down roots and be ready for change at the drop of a hat. This has all influenced her spate of dates / relationships that didn't work out. As soon as she gets too attached, something always comes along and rips it away, leaving her heart broken. So she's kind of guarded herself against this happening again.
Chase, on the other hand, has always been treated as the family screw-up and honestly for a good long while he wasn't taking his life as seriously as he could have. That all changed when he found out his former girlfriend had his baby. Like that, Chase turned his life around and became the father his daughter needed, but he still has to prove himself again and again to people.
You could really understand why Liv doesn't hang around places for long and why Chase is leery about putting himself out there. They're both bracing for rejection. It's heartbreaking, but Serena Bell wrote these things in a very relatable way. I loved watching them navigate their feelings for one another.
While I really enjoyed this book, I also felt like it was just a pretty standard book. I think it's written well with great characters and a good story. So why 3 stars? Well, I'd say because it's just a fine book. There's absolutely nothing wrong with it, but there is also equally nothing outstanding and game changing about it.
I will definitely check out other books by Serena Bell, and I'm pretty sure there's some secondary characters from Head Over Heels who are begging to get their Happily Ever After and I'll gladly pick up that book and see where things go.
Requested and received an ARC from NetGalley.
3.5
The synopsis is a little off the mark and doesn’t tell you that Liv has taken a job in another state so the majority of the book happens over about 2 weeks. Because they were friends for years it didn’t trigger my insta-love loathing but it also didn’t pace itself as slow as I would have liked since they were in a time crunch. Chase seemed like a great guy but I would have liked to have spent more time learning how he overcame the obstacles from his past but we were only given one real conversation about who he was and almost nothing about how he became who he is now. Liv was easier to understand but it may have been better for her history with Zeke to have come out sooner than it did. Chase and Liv together were HOT. Katie was cute and I really liked seeing all of them interact together. This was an ARC so I did find a few mistakes but I’ll keep my fingers crossed those get fixed in the final edit...
Another good “snowed in despite it being April” read and looking forward to the next book.
I have read and reviewed books for Serena Bell before. She writes uncomplicated romance novels that resonate with her readers. Head Over Heels is not any different. This book was a quick read with a hot romance and memorable characters. But, for some reason, I didn’t get as into this book as I should have. It was because of the opposite attracts angle. I also couldn’t connect with Liv. Her commitment issues bothered me.
I liked that this book was a quick read. I have read a lot of books with heavier subjects, so to pick this one up and get lost in a romance was fantastic. I didn’t have to think too much when reading it. Again, another plus. That is also the main reason I read romances. Because they are usually lighter in subject and I don’t have to waste too much brain space on them.
The chemistry between Chase and Liv was hot. Which is why I was confused when it was made clear that they were incompatible. I mean, their chemistry was off the pages hot. I didn’t get it. Maybe it’s me (thinking that it is me….lol). Their sex scenes were on the same page too. Unbelievably hot. I got all flustered reading them. Like I have stated in other reviews, if my could have steamed up, it would have.
Like I mentioned above, the characters were memorable. Their backstories got to me. Chase being a manly outdoorsman with a 5-year old that he didn’t know about until almost a year after she was born. Liv, a nanny, being in foster care and having issues putting down roots because of that. The author did a great job of taking their backgrounds and creating characters that stood out in your minds.
Unfortunately, I could not connect with Liv. Her issues with commitment were awful and put a huge damper on her relationship with Chase. I started to get irritated with her when she couldn’t give Chase the commitment he wanted because they were different. It made me groan and think to myself “Should I skip to the ending. Because we know how it’s going to end“.
I did like Chase’s daughter. She reminded me of my 4-year-old. My 4-year-old doesn’t have a Frozen obsession, though. She has a Coco obsession. Her nightmares and meltdowns over her mother were heartbreaking. I wanted to cuddle her.
The end of Head Over Heels was cute. I loved that it ended well for everyone in the book.
Fun, funny and sweet read. Loved the opposite attraction, toss in a child and you have a fun read on your hands!
